The Big Kolkata Derby Returns in ISL 2024-25

The legendary Kolkata Derby returns to the Indian Super League this season as well. The Salt Lake Stadium will play host to East Bengal FC facing Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Saturday, with it being the first derby of the season between two old Kolkata rivals.

East Bengal: Struggles under new leadership

Much has transpired for both teams since that last head-to-head in March 2024. East Bengal FC was still basking in glory after the Super Cup win; that was under new head coach Carles Cuadrat but things have dipped since then. They lost the last derby 1-3 and are yet to win a match for the ISL this season.

Mohun Bagan Excellent Form

Mohun Bagan Super Giant enters this derby at a high, as they have been on top of their game since their dominating 3-0 win against Mohammedan Sporting in their last match and made them keep going without a loss against East Bengal in the ISL.

Over 100 Years of Rivalry

The two Kolkata giants have been having a feud over a hundred years, and the first match between the clubs was held on 8 August 1921. Since then, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan have clashed with each other 394 times, and although it is pretty neck-and-neck for each other, with East Bengal having won 139 of them and Mohun Bagan 129, 126 matches were drawn.

Mohun Bagan's Supremacy in ISL

The Super Giant have been on a roll in the ISL era and have not given East Bengal a single victory in the Kolkata derby. In all eight matches played so far, Mohun Bagan has won seven and drawn one.
