Dhiraj Bommadevara has earned India's first archery spot in men's recurve for the Paris Olympics in 2024. He won 6-0 against Iran's Mohammad Hossein Golshani Asl in the Archery Continental Qualifying Tournament (ACQT) semifinal in Bangkok.
In the final, Bommadevara competed closely with Lin Zih-Siang from Chinese Taipei but settled for a silver medal after losing 6-5 (10-9) in a shoot-off.
Bommadevara, along with coach Sonam Tshering Bhutia, will train at the Kim Archery School in Korea later this month, pending approval from the sports ministry's Mission Olympic Cell.
However, other Indian participants, Tarundeep Rai and Ankita Bhakat, did not advance to the semifinals. Two quota spots per gender are awarded based on final standings at the ACQT, with a limit of one spot per gender per National Olympic Committee.
In summary, Bommadevara's journey in the ACQT involved a convincing win in the quarterfinal and semifinal but ended with a narrow loss in the final. This accomplishment is significant for Indian archery on the global stage.
