In the recent match of Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh in ODI World Cup 2023, Angelo Mathews an all-rounder from Sri Lanka, became the first player to be "timed out" in the history of international cricket.
Moments after reaching the middle of the pitch during Monday afternoon's World Cup match in Delhi, Mathews was warned by the umpires to walk back off the ground, and he chucked his helmet in fury.
Following Sadeera Samarawickrama's dismissal by Shakib al-Hasan, Bangladesh then filed an appeal to have Mathews timed out due to a problem with the veteran's helmet strap, which prevented him from facing the opposition at the time of his replacement call.
This outraged Mathews, who argued with opposition captain Shakib before the umpires gave him the marching orders.
According to the playing regulations set forth by the International Cricket Council, an arriving batter must "be ready to receive the ball … within 2 minutes of the (previous) dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out".
The Marylebone Cricket Club's Laws of Cricket, which grant batters three minutes to face up, have been replaced by those regulations.
There are only six cases of cricket's rarest dismissal in men's first-class matches, whereas Mathews' timed-out dismissal is the first of its sort in any form of international cricket.
1. Jordaan Andrew
In a 1988 cricket match between Eastern Province and Transvaal, Andrew Jordaan became the first in the history of cricket to be timed out.
2. Yadav Hemulal
Hemulal Yadav's victory in cricket was decided in a matter of seconds, yet the game can sometimes be decided by inches. Hemulal Yadav met an unforeseen end in 1997 when he was timed out during a first-class match between Orissa and Tripura.
3. Drakes Vasbert
When Border and Free State played their first-class match in East London in 2002, Vasbert Drakes ended up in an unexpected circumstance.
Drakes was finally timed out after failing to arrive at the match in time due to a delayed flight.
4. Andrew Harris
There are many notable moments in cricket history, and one such event happened in 2003 when Durham and Nottinghamshire played one other. Andrew Harris became a part of that history. Harris was the fourth player in history to receive the timed-out judgment.
5. Austin Ryan
During the 2014 first-class match between Combined Campuses and Colleges and Windward Islands, Ryan Austin discovered this the hard way. He failed to reach the crease in time and so he was timed out, emphasising the importance of time management.
6. Charles Kunje
Charles Kunje was not in the right frame of mind during the Matabeleland Tuskers vs. Mountaineers game. He was timed out after being unable to get to the crease in the allotted three minutes.
