Cricket returns to the Olympics in 2028 after 128-year absence

Cricket will be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking its return to the Games after 128 years, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Monday.

At the 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Mumbai, the Organising Committee (OC) of the 2028 Los Angeles Games has proposed to include the following sports in the programme: Baseball/Softball, Lacrosse, Squash and Flag Football. Cricket had its only outing at the 1900 Paris Olympics when Great Britain emerged victorious over France in the final match. However, the sport is also featured in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

Two IOC members voiced opposition to the proposal, while one member abstained from voting. The IOC Session has officially accepted the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (@LA28) proposal to include five new sports in the program. These sports include baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash for the LA28 Olympics. This announcement was made via a tweet by the IOC Media using the hashtag #IOCMumbai2023.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Mumbai on Saturday. The IOC Session is a key meeting of IOC members where vital decisions about the future of the Olympic Games are made. This is the second time that India has hosted the IOC Session and the first time in 40 years. The IOC's 86th Session was held in New Delhi in 1983.
