Jasprit Bumrah becomes the first Indian fast bowler to the top of the ICC Test rankings

Following a brilliant performance in India's second Test match against England, Jasprit Bumrah has surged to the top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings for the first time in his professional career. Bumrah became the first Indian fast bowler to be ranked #1 in the ICC Test rankings by unseating compatriot Ravichandran Ashwin from the spot.

The only other Indian players to have topped the bowling charts before are Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Singh Bedi. Bumrah is the fourth player overall to achieve it. The 30-year-old's prior greatest standing was third, which he held on several occasions.

Before the commencement of the second Test, Bumrah was ranked fourth; he has since moved up three spots to occupy the top spot. The South African pacemaker Kagiso Rabada, who missed the Proteas' Test series in New Zealand, is still ranked second in the revised rankings for Test bowlers, with Ashwin, who has been ranked first since March of last year, falling two spots to third.

In the second Test at Visakhapatnam, Bumrah scored an incredible 9/91 during his team's 106-run victory over England that leveled the series. Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his nine-wicket haul, beating opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a double century in India's first innings.

Even though spin bowlers often enjoy more favorable conditions in India, Bumrah has undoubtedly been the country's finest bowler during the series. Specifically in the second Test, Bumrah delivered figures of 6/45 in the first innings and 3/46 in the closing over for England. The ballpark of the cricket world cheered as Ollie Pope was removed in the first innings with a vicious swinging yorker that smashed into the base of both the middle and leg stump.

This was Bumrah's sixth Test match in India, having been rested or injured most of the time since his debut in 2018. Despite this, he has amassed an incredible 29 wickets at an astounding average of 13.06 in the Tests he has played at home. Bumrah has taken 155 wickets at an average of 20.19 in 34 Test matches total.
