The Board of Control for Cricket in India, (BCCI) appointed former Indian bowler Ajit Agarkar (45) as chairman of the selectors committee of the Indian men's team. He applied for the vacancy and after his interview by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which has Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshna Naik and Jatin Paranjape on board, unanimously selected him for a vacant post in a group of five.
The Indian men's selection committee now consists of Shiv Sundar Das, Salil Ankola, Subroto Banerjee, Sridharan Sharat and Ajit Agarkar. He has been declared as chairman of the panel on a seniority basis.
This post was vacant after Chetan Sharma relinquished it in February in regards to a sting operation carried out by an Indian channel.
Earlier, Ajit Agarkar was chief selector for Mumbai Indians and also had coaching responsibility for Delhi Capitals.
Seniority level is not just one reason behind his appointment as head, but also his career in cricket matters the same. Till date, he has played 26 Tests, 191 One Day Internationals, 4 T20 Internationals, 110 first class and 62 T20 matches. He still holds the record for fastest half century by an Indian in One Day Internationals. In that match, he scored fifty in just 21 balls against Zimbabwe in 2000. He has a total of 349 international wickets in his name.
Ajit Agarkar in the roles of assistant coach of Delhi Capitals and commentator used to earn way more than what BCCI offers for the post of selectors chairman. BCCI offers an annual package of 1 crore to the chairman. But now BCCI has to change the pay structure looking at his experience.
BCCI has the rule of having selectors from five different zones. But now it has decided to go away with the existing zonal system. So there could be two selectors from the same zone, just like now Salil Ankola and Ajit Agarkar are from the West zone.
As the quickest player and with his intelligence, he will make sure a good team will perform in the T20 World Cup next year.
