Cameron Norrie defeats Casper Ruud to reach the fourth round of Australian Open
19th seeded British number one Cameron Norrie displayed a fine scoreboard at the Australian Open 2024 after he beat 11th seeded Casper Ruud from Norway. Norrie won the match, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-3 in Melbourne.
After defeating the three-time Grand Slam finalist, Casper Ruud, Norrie is the first British player to advance to the fourth round of the Australian Open since Kyle Edmund in 2018. Norrie had never beaten a player ranked as high as Ruud at a major tournament and had also lost all of his previous matches against Ruud.
Norrie in the post-match presentation said, “I had to play really brave and almost won that second set, but I didn’t let it bother me and it was a good mental performance.”
Norrie had to come up with a solid game plan and had to do something different against the Norwegian and that was quickly proven to us as he wanted to force the pace against the solid baseliners. He outplayed Ruud in all of the departments and played and placed his shots accurately and perfectly.
Rudd won the set on a tiebreak. He nevertheless felt the pressure of Norrie’s serve which eventually made him a little tired and thus the winner emerged as Norrie.
