Asian Athletics Championships 2023: India secures third place with 27 medals

Abha Khatua secured the shot put national record making it to the second spot, and Jyothi Yarraji (Women's 100m hurdles) and Parul Chaudhary (Women's 5000m) achieved their second medals, both silver, as India finished third in Thailand with 27 medals overall at the Asian Athletics Championships. Chaudhary also won gold in Women’s 3000m on the third day of the championship.

The 28-year-old Khatua significantly increased her previous lifetime best of 17.13 meters (93 cm) as she threw the 4 kg iron ball 18.06m in her fourth attempt to come in second to China's Song Jiayuan (18.88 meters). 17.10m was her second-best throw of the day.

Manpreet Kaur, a veteran whose national record was equaled on Sunday by Khatua, won the bronze with a first-round throw of 17 meters.

In addition to the six gold medals India won 12 silver and 9 bronze medals. On the competition's final day, India took home 13 medals, eight silver, and five bronze.

Japan took first place with 37 medals, including 16 gold medals, followed by China with 22 medals, which included 8 gold medals.

The 25th Asian Athletics Championships took place in Thailand from July 12 - 16, 2023, marking the Asian Athletics Association's golden jubilee year.
