NASA's new AI model could predict solar storms

In the past, we have had various problems which have arisen due to solar storms. Now, NASA has come up with a new AI model to predict and warn us of these solar storms

What are solar storms?

When the sun emits huge solar flares or coronal mass ejections, which are basically caused because the sun releasing huge bursts of energy or stored magnetic energy. Solar storms are the reason that the Aurora caused in our atmosphere.

Solar Storms

The Aurora phenomenon takes place when the particles emitting from the sun reach Earth’s atmosphere and interfere with Earth’s magnetic field. When these particles are strong they can also cause blackouts and induce electricity in long pipelines.

This is among the main reasons that NASA’s new AI model will be helpful.

The model is called DAGGER (Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation), and it will forecast and give a warning 30 minutes before a solar storm. It will do so by using AI to analyze spacecraft measurements of the solar wind.

According to researchers at the Frontier Development Lab, the model can state its predictions in less than a second and these predictions are ever updating.

The DAGGER model has been created in partnership with NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Department of Energy.
