Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian politician who served as the Prime Minister of India from the year 1998 to the year 2004.
He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was known for his efforts to promote economic liberalization and improve relations with Pakistan.
He was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior Madhya Pradesh.
He began his political career in the 1950s as a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization.
He later joined the BJP and was elected to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) in 1957.
In 1977, he was appointed Minister of External Affairs in Prime Minister Morarji Desai's government and later became the BJP's leader.
