“Will not take Rebels back”, Says Uddhav Thackeray in MVA Joint Press Conference

On Saturday. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray addressed a joint press conference in south Mumbai, along with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan All three Parties are constituent of Maha Vikas Aghadi. 

This was the first press conference of the MVA after Lok Sabha results were announced on June 4. MVA gave a stellar performance in the Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra.

“It is just the beginning”

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition will win the next state assembly elections and that their recent victory in the Lok Sabha elections is only the beginning.

“The victory in the Lok Sabha polls was just the beginning,” Thackeray stated.

Thackeray emphasised the strategic importance of their coalition and the significance of the Lok Sabha victory.

Taking a dig at BJP, “The people of Maharashtra have demonstrated that the myth of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) invincibility is hollow. This win is not the end; it is merely the start of a greater journey. We are confident that the MVA will also triumph in the upcoming assembly elections.”

"(Maharashtra) Assembly elections are coming shortly. Earlier, it was the Modi government, and now it has become the NDA government. Now it is to be seen how long this government will last," the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief said in a press conference.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi, has been preparing for the state assembly elections scheduled later this year. Earlier, the MVA leaders held a preliminary meeting to strategize for the state assembly elections.

“Not taking Rebels Back”

Amid speculation about some leaders from rival factions wanting to return. Mr. Thackeray and Mr. Pawar cleared that “there is no question of taking rebel leaders back who have deserted the two parties.”

Leaders from both Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party had been split into two factions, the other faction joining hands with the BJP-led NDA. NCP split into two factions after Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs joined the State government in July of last year, while the Shiv Sena split in June 2022 following a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde, who later became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. 

Stellar Performance by MVA in Lok Sabha elections

All together the three parties constituting MVA, have shown a stellar performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The Congress won 13 seats in a huge increase from the one seat it won in the state in 2019. The NCP (SP) received eight seats, and the Shiv Sena (UBT) secured nine. 

As part of the general election seat-sharing agreement, Uddhav Thackeray had the most seats. The Sena (UBT) contested 21 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats available, followed by the Congress with 17 and the NCP (SP) with 10.

On the other hand, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar were only able to secure seven and one victories respectively, while the BJP's total in the State decreased from 23 in the 2019 general elections to nine this time.
