Shibu Soren, a towering figure in Indian tribal politics, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, and founding member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away on August 4, 2025, at the age of 81. His death marks the end of an era for Jharkhand and the broader tribal movement in India. He had been undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi since June 19 due to kidney-related complications, compounded by a recent stroke. His son and current Jharkhand Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, confirmed the somber news on social media, saying, “Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us. I lost everything today.”
A Life Dedicated to Tribal Empowerment
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village, located in the Ramgarh district (then part of Bihar, now in Jharkhand), Shibu Soren belonged to the Santhal tribal community. His early life was marked by profound personal loss — his father was killed by moneylenders when Soren was still a child. This tragic incident ignited in him a fierce sense of justice and galvanized his lifelong commitment to tribal rights and social equity.
At just 18 years old, Soren founded the Santhal Navyuvak Sangh, an organization aimed at mobilizing tribal youth. In 1972, he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) with A.K. Roy, a Leftist trade union leader, and Binod Bihari Mahato, a Kurmi-Mahato leader. The JMM’s primary mission was to advocate for a separate tribal state — a goal that materialized in 2000 when Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar.
Political Career: From Grassroots Activist to Chief Minister
Shibu Soren's political journey spanned over four decades and was marked by numerous highs and several challenges. He was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times, starting in 1980 from the Dumka constituency, which became his political stronghold. In addition, he served three terms in the Rajya Sabha, including one ongoing at the time of his death.
Tenures as Chief Minister of Jharkhand
Soren served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on three occasions:
-
March 2005 – His first term lasted just nine days, as he was unable to prove a majority in the Assembly.
-
August 2008 – January 2009 – A brief tenure that ended due to coalition instability.
-
December 2009 – May 2010 – His final term also ended prematurely following political fallout with allies.
Despite never completing a full term, his leadership was instrumental in shaping the early political landscape of the newly formed state.

Roles in the Union Cabinet
Shibu Soren held the Coal Minister portfolio in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, with three separate stints between 2004 and 2006. However, his journey in the Union Cabinet was fraught with turbulence:
-
In 2004, he was forced to resign after an arrest warrant was issued against him in connection with the 1974 Chirudih case, which involved a violent clash between tribals and Muslims. He was later released on bail.
-
In 2006, he made headlines again after being convicted in the murder case of his former personal secretary Shashinath Jha. Soren had to resign, becoming the first Union Minister to be convicted in a murder case. However, he was later acquitted by the Delhi High Court.
These legal battles, though controversial, did little to diminish his influence in Jharkhand’s politics or among tribal communities nationwide.
Legacy: ‘Dishom Guru’ – The Great Leader of the Tribals
Known affectionately as ‘Dishom Guru’ (Great Leader) by his followers, Soren was more than just a politician — he was a symbol of tribal dignity, resistance, and empowerment. He led the JMM from 1987 until April 2025, remaining its president and ideological cornerstone even after stepping back from active politics due to declining health.
Shibu Soren's leadership helped bring tribal issues to the forefront of national discourse. His fight against land exploitation and his efforts to safeguard the rights of indigenous communities earned him a near-mythical status among his people.

Family and Personal Life
Soren is survived by his wife and children, including his son Hemant Soren, who currently serves as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Hemant has often credited his father as his mentor and guiding force in both politics and life. At the time of his death, Shibu Soren had been largely retired from public life, having delegated party responsibilities earlier in the year due to health issues.

The End of an Era
Shibu Soren’s death marks not just the loss of a veteran politician but the end of a generation of tribal leadership that believed in justice, self-rule, and identity. As Jharkhand and the nation bid farewell to their 'Dishom Guru', his legacy lives on through the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, his son Hemant Soren, and the countless tribal communities he inspired.
His contributions to the tribal cause, Indian democracy, and statehood movement remain etched in history — a reminder of the power of grassroots movements and the enduring spirit of resistance against oppression.
