Surat Court denies relief to Rahul Gandhi over defamation case

The Surat sessions court refused to stay Rahul Gandhi's conviction for defamation, leading to his loss of parliamentary membership. The Congress party argues that the judgment was flawed and erroneous as the judge based his decision on alleged defamation of the Prime Minister, even though Narendra Modi was not the complainant.

The judge also compared the case against Rahul to more severe charges, assumed Rahul failed to establish irreparable damage and disregarded the Supreme Court's judgments in his favour. Rahul's lawyers believe that his comment about the "Modi" surname being common among thieves was misinterpreted. Singhvi, who heads Rahul's legal team, criticized the judge's decision and said that Rahul would appeal before the high court. Conviction and a sentence of two years or more disqualify a person as a lawmaker and debars them from contesting elections for six years after completing the sentence.
