The 'One Nation, One Election' committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, will hold its first meeting on September 23. The committee, consisting of eight members, has been formed to examine and make recommendations on the issue of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats. The members include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former Finance Commission chairman NK Singh, and others.
The committee's main tasks include recommending amendments to the Constitution and other laws for holding simultaneous elections, examining the need for ratification by the states, and finding solutions for scenarios like a hung House or no-confidence motions. The committee will also consider public opinions and communications to finalise its recommendations. The formation of the committee comes ahead of the assembly elections in five states and the Lok Sabha polls next year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been advocating for 'One Nation, One Election' to reduce the frequency of elections and save public money.
