Rahul Gandhi Visits Relief Camps in Assam and Manipur

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, recently visited relief camps in Assam and Manipur to meet with people affected by floods and ethnic violence.

Assam Visit

Rahul Gandhi began his visit in Assam, where he arrived at Kumbhirgram airport in Silchar. He visited a relief camp at Thalai in Youth Care Center, Fulertal, Lakhipur, interacting with flood victims. 

58 people have died as a result of the present flood situation in Assam, while 53,429 more are taking refuge in shelter camps spread out around the state. Up to 23.9 lakh individuals have been impacted thus far in 3,535 localities. The whole crop area, 68,769 hectares, has been flooded.

Manipur Visit

Rahul Gandhi then made his third visit to Manipur.He started his Manipur visit from Jiribam district. In Jiribam, he visited a relief camp at Jiribam Higher Secondary School and interacted with the displaced residents. 

Gandhi then proceeded to Churachandpur district, visiting another relief camp in Tuibong village. Here, he spoke with the victims, listened to their grievances, and assured them of his support. He also visited relief camps in Phubala and Moirang in Bishnupur district.

Rahul Gandhi is also accompanied by senior Congress leaders.  Congress on X posted, “His third visit to Manipur post-violence shows his unwavering commitment to the people’s cause.”

Prior to this, Rahul had visited violence-hit Manipur two times, first in June, 2023 and later in January this year, when he had embarked his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ from Imphal. The ethnic violence in Manipur has led to over 200 deaths since May last year, displacing many people.

Meeting with the Governor

Rahul Gandhi also paid Governor Anusuiya Uikey of Manipur a visit at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. He talked about the state of affairs and reaffirmed his support for those impacted by the violence. Gandhi is making his first trip to the Northeast since taking over as the Lok Sabha's Leader of the Opposition.

Gandhi's visit was accompanied by increased security, particularly in Jiribam where earlier in the day there had been reports of an attack on security personnel. Gandhi's and the locals' safety was guaranteed by the authorities while he was there.
