PM Extends Greetings Amit Shah Honors Fallen Heroes at BSF's 59th Raising Day

BSF, the world's largest border guarding force with around 250,000 personnel, marks its Raising Day on December 1 annually.

Tasked with safeguarding India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, BSF stands as the sole force with distinct roles in both war and peace. Its unwavering dedication ensures peace along the border while excelling in all assigned missions, whether in times of conflict or tranquility.

Stationed in harsh terrains and remote areas, BSF soldiers act as the stalwarts protecting India's frontiers against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Before 1965, India's border with Pakistan was managed by State Armed Police Battalion. However, the attack on Sardar Post, Chhar Bet, and Beria Bet by Pakistan exposed the need for a specialized, centrally controlled force. Consequently, the Border Security Force was formed on December 1, 1965, based on recommendations from the Committee of Secretaries.

Initially comprising 25 battalions, BSF expanded over time to counter militancy in regions like Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Northeast. Presently, it consists of 192 battalions (including three NDRF) and seven BSF artillery regiments guarding the international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Beyond border protection, BSF actively engages in anti-infiltration measures in Kashmir Valley, counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, anti-naxal activities in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, and security at integrated checkposts along the borders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his regards to BSF on their Raising Day, acknowledging their crucial role in safeguarding India's frontiers and their commendable efforts in rescue operations during natural calamities.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to the BSF personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty on the 59th Raising Day in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district.
