Mizoram Elections - Will Manipur's unrest be a deciding factor in the 40 seats

In the Mizoram Election 2023, a total of 174 candidates participated in the electoral process. By 3 p.m. on Tuesday, nearly 70% of the 8.57 lakh eligible voters had cast their valuable votes. Among the 1,276 polling stations, 149 are located in remote areas and 30 are near borders that are considered important. Within the 852,088 voters, there are 50,611 individuals who will be casting their vote for the first time. These first-time voters hold the belief that the new government should prioritize the development of the state.

The primary contenders in the election include the Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, and Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), who are vying for victory in all 40 constituencies. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), AAP, and Independent candidates, on the other hand, are competing in 23, 4, and 27 seats respectively. It is worth noting that the MNF, ZPM, and Congress are the key parties to keep an eye on.

For over three decades, Mizoram has been under the governance of either the Congress or the Mizo National Front (MNF). However, the current situation is more complex. In 2018, the MNF, in collaboration with the BJP, emerged victorious, while the Congress obtained fewer seats. Additionally, a new party called ZPM has entered into the political mix.

The MNF and BJP are allies, however, they occasionally have differing opinions. The MNF prioritizes Mizo pride and has played a significant role in facilitating the settlement of Zo tribal people in Mizoram. Unfortunately, this has led to certain complications, particularly concerning refugees from Manipur. In fact, the MNF's leader, Zoramthanga, has even opposed the directives of the Central government regarding refugees.

The support of the MNF for the NDA is contingent upon specific issues, and they are contemplating the possibility of withdrawing from the alliance. Tensions have arisen due to the BJP's allegations that the MNF has not effectively managed development projects. Given that the state is predominantly Christian, the association of the MNF with the BJP might pose a concern.

It appears that the MNF is poised to achieve victory once again, considering its track record. However, the Congress, under the leadership of Lalsawta, is diligently addressing various financial issues and providing assistance to refugees from Manipur. Moreover, they are actively discussing measures to safeguard tribal rights.

Next, we have the ZPM, an emerging political party that is rapidly gaining popularity, particularly among urban communities. They present a novel approach to governance and hold deep regard for Mizo heritage. Under the leadership of Lalduhoma, a highly esteemed ex-law enforcement officer, they have garnered significant support from the youth and aspire to instigate transformative reforms in contrast to the conventional MNF and Congress parties.

The BJP, despite having only one member, is actively seeking additional support. They are actively collaborating with local leaders and communities, and there have been discussions about a potential partnership with the ZPM.

Mizoram is currently facing a crucial decision in this election. Both established parties and a new contender are competing for the people's vote, highlighting the significance of the choice at hand. It is important to recognize that the outcome of this decision will have a profound impact on the future governance of the state.
