Karnataka CM demands the inclusion of AIIMS Raichur in the Union Budget

In a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah has asked her to incorporate a State proposal for the construction of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raichur district into the upcoming budget.

Aspirational district Raichur is located in the Kalyana Karnataka region, where per capita income, healthcare, and education standards are still below average when compared to other Karnataka regions. A first-rate referral medical center is desperately needed in the Raichur district, according to Siddaramaiah's letter dated January 29.

Inclusion of AIIMS in the Budget

The Karnataka CM stated, "The State Government, after considering possible locations, is of the view that Raichur is the most suitable place to establish an AIIMS," acknowledging that the request to establish an AIIMS in Karnataka had been pending for a while. Therefore, I would ask that the upcoming Budget for 2024–2025 include the establishment of AIIMS at Raichur."

A copy of the Chief Minister's letter dated June 17, 2023, addressed to Mansukh L. Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, on this matter, is also enclosed. Raichur has seen how several NGOs and advocacy groups have been leading ongoing agitations that highlight the "crucial need" for AIIMS in the area.

On February 1, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Interim Budget 2024–25. The whole FY25 budget will be presented after the general elections and the installation of the new government. The government's projected receipts and expenditures for each sector of the economy—including education—will be outlined in the upcoming Interim Budget and will remain thus until a new administration is formed.
