Shortly after BJP veteran leader and former Deputy Chief Minister KS Eshwarappa declared his retirement from electoral politics on Tuesday, the Party High Command requested his presence in Delhi. This development is noteworthy as Eshwarappa's announcement came just before the saffron party's first candidate list was set to be released, leading to conjecture about the party potentially postponing the candidate announcement.
On Tuesday, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Karnataka deputy chief minister KS Eshwarappa informed the party's central leadership of his desire to retire from electoral politics and urged them not to nominate him from any constituency in the upcoming Assembly polls next month. Eshwarappa's decision, which followed his resignation as a minister last year on a corruption charge, came at a time when the BJP was finalizing its list of candidates for the elections. In a letter to BJP President J P Nadda, Eshwarappa expressed his appreciation to the party's seniors who had given him honorable positions during his 40-year political career, which began at the booth level and culminated as Deputy Chief Minister.
The 74-year-old Kuruba leader, a five-time MLA from Shivamogga who has held various ministerial portfolios, is also known for making controversial statements. In the state, Kurubas are classified as OBCs.
The announcement by Eshwarappa coincided with reports that the central leadership was contemplating the possibility of not offering him a ticket for the polls.
