Aruna Miller has become the 10th Lieutenant Governor of the US state of Maryland. Miller, who is Hyderabad-born, is the first Indian-American politician to be sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor in the state of Maryland.
Miller was sworn in on Wednesday and is part of a historic Democratic ticket that sailed to victory in November last year.
She was born in India and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1970. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland. She worked as a civil engineer for over 20 years before entering politics.
She was first elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2010. She has served on several committees in the House of Delegates, including the Transportation and the Environment Committee. She has been a strong advocate for transportation and infrastructure improvements in Maryland.
She has supported legislation to increase public school funding and expand healthcare access. She was a 2018 candidate for Maryland's 6th congressional district. She is the first Asian-American woman to serve in the Maryland House of Delegates. She has a reputation for working across the aisle and being a pragmatic leader.
Miller has served two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018 and has worked for 25 years in the local Department of Transportation in Montgomery County, Maryland.
