'How does our President Look' : TMC Minister's embarassing gaffe invokes criticism

A video of the Minister for Correctional Administration while a public speech in Nandigram has gone viral, passing controversial comments on President’s looks. Trinamool Congress Minister, Akhil Giri is receiving serious criticism from BJP for passing comments on President Droupadi Murmu.

The video that has gone viral gives a clear shot at Akhil Giri when he’s making comments while addressing the public. He is seen saying, “He (Suvendu Adhikari) said that I am not good-looking. How beautiful is he? We don’t judge anyone by their appearance. We respect the office of the President (of India). But how does our President look?”

To which the BJP IT cell Chief Amit Malviya said: “Akhil Giri, minister in Mamta Banerjee’s cabinet, insults the President, says, ‘We don’t care about looks. But how does your President look?’ Mamata Banerjee has always been anti-tribal, didn’t support President Murmu for office, and now this. Shameful level of discourse.”

Demanding the resignation of Giri, the BJP West Bengal unit has also protested against the minister asking for an apology. The BJP’s Bengal unit tweeted, “President Droupadi Murmu, hails from the Tribal community. Akhil Giri, TMC Minister of Correctional Homes made objectionable comments about her in the presence of Shashi Panja, another minister from the women’s welfare department. Mamata Banerjee and TMC are anti-tribal.’’

After receiving severe criticism since the video went viral on Thursday, Akhil Giri offered an apology on Friday. He said, “I have taken oath as a minister. I respect both the Constitution of India and the President of the country. I was referring to comments by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who kept attacking me over my looks. However, I apologize for my statements and would like to reiterate that I have immense respect for President Droupadi Murmu.”

Previously a similar situation took place with Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury referring to President Murmu as “Rashtrapatni” and received immense backlash for delivering such a statement. Later on, the minister had to apologize for his actions.
