Greta Thunberg was detained by German police on Tuesday during a protest against the expansion of a coal mine in western Germany. According to reports, Thunberg was participating in a sit-in near the edge of the mine when she and other activists were detained. The mine is one of three massive open-pit coal mines in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is responsible for about 20% of Germany's carbon emissions. The protesters are calling for the mine to be closed earlier than planned in order to reduce the country's carbon emissions.
