Gautam Gambhir Quits Politics, Requests BJP to "relieve him from political duties"

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Gautam Gambhir has announced his decision to step away from active politics. The former Indian cricketer expressed a request to the party to release him from “political duties” so he can focus on his upcoming cricket commitments. 

Gambhir, who represents the East Delhi parliamentary constituency, made the appeal to BJP Chief JP Nadda, while also extending gratitude to Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to serve the people.

Gautam Gambhir took to his X account, to share the news with his followers and supporters. He expressed his desire to prioritize his cricket commitments, highlighting the need to refocus his attention on the sport he passionately pursued before entering politics.

“I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!”

The 42-year-old Gambhir transitioned to the Politics subsequent to his retirement from international cricket in December 2018. Gambhir joined the BJP in March 2019 and swiftly emerged as a key figure for the party in Delhi. He contested and secured victory in the East Delhi constituency during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, garnering a significant lead of 6,95,109 votes.

Gambhir's decision to leave politics comes as there's speculation that he may not be given a ticket for the upcoming 2024 polls. 

The BJP is anticipated to unveil its initial list of candidates, comprising over 100 names, which will feature prominent figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for the 2024 Lok Sabha election shortly.

Gambhir will be preoccupied in the upcoming months due to his responsibilities in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gambhir, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles as captain in 2012 and 2014 and remains one of the most successful captains in IPL history, now serves as the team's mentor. 

His association with KKR continues as he mentors the team for the upcoming IPL 2024 season, set to begin on March 22nd. He served as the mentor for the Lucknow SuperGiants in the IPL's 2022 and 2023 seasons before rejoining the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). 

KKR's IPL 2024 campaign kicks off against Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground, Eden Gardens, on March 23rd.
