G20 summit - Joe Biden to attend meet in India, what it might mean

The White House announced on Tuesday that US Vice President Joe Biden will visit New Delhi from September 7 to September 10 to attend the G20 conference and take part in bilateral discussions with a variety of dignitaries.

According to American national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who was quoted by Hindustan Times, Biden will firmly push for the reform of multilateral development banks (MDBs) with a proposal that strengthens these organizations' financial capacity to address issues like eradicating poverty, fostering prosperity, and addressing the climate crisis.

Sullivan added that Biden will convey to the developing world that the US supports them.

Biden and G20 partners will discuss a variety of coordinated initiatives to address global concerns, focusing on the clean energy transition and combating climate change, as well as minimizing the economic and social repercussions of the Ukraine conflict, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

The White House statement added, “While in New Delhi, President Biden will also commend Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi’s leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026.”

Mint calculates that 29 heads of state, as well as high-ranking representatives of the European Union, guest nations, and 14 leaders of international organizations, will attend the event.

Prestigious hotels including ITC Maurya, Taj Palace, The Oberoi, The Lodhi, The Imperial, and Le Meridien have all reserved several rooms for this purpose.

According to Navbharat Times, President Biden and his traveling companions will stay in one of ITC Maurya's 400 rooms. Former US Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, along with other world leaders, have all stayed at the hotel. Before the POTUS's arrival, the hotel's grounds were reportedly being checked by the US Secret Service.
