Due to recent security events in Israel, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, who had been scheduled to visit India for three days, has cut short his trip and will likely return later today.
He did, however, announce on Twitter that he will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving later today.
The minister posted in Hebrew on Twitter “I landed a short time ago in New Delhi, the capital of India, and as soon as I landed I received a security update. In light of the events in Israel, I decided to cut short my political visit to India and return to Israel after my meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi which will take place today.”
Cohen had stated at the CII India-Israel Business Forum in Delhi that he would discuss the Israel-India Free Trade Agreement with PM Modi.
During the meeting, India and Israel signed three new Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) in his and Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat's presence.
This morning, the Israeli foreign minister traveled to New Delhi to look into measures to strengthen bilateral ties and lay the groundwork for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to India later this year.
Israel has reportedly started a significant military attack aimed at some militants in the Gaza Strip, according to sources from Tel Aviv.
According to them, the airstrikes had claimed the lives of at least 12 Palestinians.
In recent years, relations between India and Israel have improved in several fields, including water management, agriculture, and defense.
The possibility of strengthening bilateral strategic collaboration was discussed by Prime Minister Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the phone in January.
