Dhirendra Shastri’s Krishna Remark: The Apology, Akhilesh Yadav’s Attack and What It Means for UP 2027

It took only a few sentences at a religious event in Madhya Pradesh to set off a controversy that has travelled far beyond the stage where it began. Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, the head of Bageshwar Dham, popularly known as Baba Bageshwar, compared Lord Ram and Lord Krishna in a way that many devotees found disrespectful to Krishna. Within hours, the video was circulating widely, the Yadav community was voicing its objections, and the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) was demanding action.

By Monday, the preacher had apologised. But in Uttar Pradesh, where every symbol is read through the lens of the 2027 Assembly elections, the political argument has only begun.

What Did Dhirendra Shastri Say?

According to reports, during a religious discourse in Madhya Pradesh, Shastri compared the appearance, posture, and characteristics associated with the two deities. The remark has been summed up in coverage as “your Krishna, our Ram.” Many devotees took it as placing one deity above the other, and members of the Yadav community, for whom Krishna holds special significance, reportedly objected strongly.

How Did He Respond?

Facing the backlash, Shastri released a video message, posted from Nairobi in Kenya, on Monday. He said that the comments were part of a devotional verse and that he had no intention of insulting any deity or of suggesting that one was greater than the other. He added that if his words or interpretation had hurt anyone’s sentiments, he offered his sincere and humble apologies. He stressed his respect for both Lord Ram and Lord Krishna.

What Did Akhilesh Yadav Say?

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav was quick to respond. In a post on X on Monday, accompanied by a video of Lord Krishna wielding the Sudarshan Chakra, he described the reported remarks as “extremely unfortunate and objectionable” and demanded action, though without naming Shastri directly. He questioned the logic of making a comparison that appeared to rank the two deities, arguing that both are incarnations of the same divine being.

Speaking to reporters in Varanasi, he went further, saying all of the preacher’s programmes should be cancelled and accusing him of insulting Sanatan Dharma. He also called for a high-level inquiry into who is behind efforts to disturb social harmony among followers of the faith, and he suggested that people close to the preacher might have an ulterior motive. In a notable appeal, he urged all political parties and their supporters to unite against what he called such conduct.

Why Does Lord Krishna Matter So Much in UP Politics?

The answer lies in identity. Lord Krishna is central to the cultural and religious identity of the Yadav community, which traces its lineage to the Yadava clan of Krishna’s story. In Uttar Pradesh, Yadavs are among the largest and most politically organised backward-class groups, and they have long been the core support base of the Samajwadi Party. Any remark seen as belittling Krishna is therefore received not merely as a theological issue but as something that touches community pride.

That is why the row has quickly acquired a political edge. The Samajwadi Party has seized on the issue, and both it and the BJP are competing for the community’s support ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. For the BJP, which has been trying to widen its appeal among backward-class groups, a controversy involving a preacher who is popular with many of its sympathisers is an awkward moment. For the SP, defending Krishna’s honour allows it to speak to its base in religious as well as political language.

What Has the BJP Said?

BJP response to the row at the time of writing. Reports of the controversy focus on the preacher’s apology and the SP’s attack.

Is This the First Time Religion Has Collided With Yadav Politics?

It is not. The pattern of religious remarks becoming political ammunition has repeated itself in the state. Earlier this year, a controversy erupted over remarks by Akhilesh Yadav in Kannauj contrasting the “stench” of cowsheds with perfume. A BJP MLC put up posters in Lucknow demanding an apology, accusing him of insulting Sanatan Dharma and communities that rear cows, and even claimed that he had insulted Lord Krishna. Akhilesh Yadav responded by asking who knew more about cows than his own community, and an SP spokesperson dismissed the charge as politically motivated. In 2023, a row over verses of the Ramcharitmanas pitted the SP against the BJP in a different way.

The upshot is that each side uses the other’s remarks as evidence of disrespect, and each insists that it is the true defender of the faith and of the community.

Will It Hurt the BJP?

That is the question some political observers are asking, but it is a prediction and not a fact. Several things would shape the answer.

  • The apology. Shastri’s quick apology may blunt the controversy, particularly if the community accepts it.
  • Who owns the outrage. If the SP can keep the issue alive and link it to the BJP, it could use it to consolidate support. If the matter fades, its impact will be limited.
  • Other issues. Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are rarely decided by a single controversy. Candidate selection, caste calculations, local issues and the government’s record all play a part, and the election is still some months away.
  • The BJP’s response. How the party handles the matter, and whether it distances itself from the remark, will matter to community perceptions.

The Yadav community’s views, of course, are not uniform, and its leaders and voters will weigh the row differently.

What Happens Next?

  • Observers will watch whether the Samajwadi Party continues to press its demand for action and for cancellation of the preacher’s programmes.
  • Community organisations may issue statements on whether they accept the apology.
  • The BJP and government leaders may be asked to respond.
  • More broadly, the episode shows how closely religion, caste and electoral politics are intertwined in Uttar Pradesh, and how a few words can turn quickly from a theological debate into a political contest.
