By-polls Live Updates: Four injured Uttarakhand's Manglaur constituency; High voter turnouts in Vikravandi, Amarwara

July 10: Voting for by-elections in 13 assembly constituencies across seven states commenced at 7 am on Wednesday. These polls, which are the first since the Lok Sabha elections, are anticipated to set the tone for the BJP and the Opposition as they prepare for the Budget Session, which begins on July 22.

The following constituencies are up for election: Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda, and Maniktala in West Bengal; Badrinath and Manglaur in Uttarakhand; Jalandhar West in Punjab; Dehra, Hamirpur, and Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh; Rupauli in Bihar; Vikravandi in Tamil Nadu; and Amarwara in Madhya Pradesh.

  • Vikravandi Assembly by-polls: 77.73% turnout by 5 pm 

As of 5 pm, 77.73% of voters had participated in the Tamil Nadu by-poll for the Vikravandi Assembly constituency, according to the most recent data released by the Election Commission.

  • Four injured in Uttarakhand's Manglaur constituency

According to police, a clash between supporters of rival parties at the polling booth during by-polls in Uttarkhand's Manglaur Assembly constituency has caused injuries to four people. These four individuals hurt in the scuffle have been taken to the hospital. There was allegedly gunfire at the booth, according to some reports. However, the police and district administration refuted these claims.

Additionally, the State's Badrinath Assembly constituency was also conducting polling today. Manglaur recorded 56.21% voter turnout by 3 pm, while Badrinath recorded 40.50%.

  • Voter turnout till 3 pm: Vikravandi - 64.44%; Amarwara 66.58%

At the by-poll held on Wednesday for the Vikravandi assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, a high turnout of voters participated. The Election Commission announced a 64.44% voter turnout by 1 pm. Voting began at 7 am, and by 9 am, 12.94% of voters had already completed their ballots. The DMK legislator N Pughazhendhi passed away on April 6 from sickness, necessitating this by-poll.

According to Election Commission figures, 66.58% of voters have cast ballots in the Madhya Pradesh Amarwara Assembly by-election as of 3 p.m. These have been among the highest voter turnouts of today's elections. 

  • A woman was attacked in a polling booth in Vikravandi

On Wednesday at a polling place in T. Kosapalayam, in the Vikravandi Assembly constituency, a woman suffered cut injuries on her neck after being slashed with a knife, allegedly by her ex-husband.

Further investigation is now underway. To watch the proceedings from a control room, the authorities have installed webcasting capabilities in each of the 276 booths in the Assembly area.

  • A dispute breaks out between TMC and BJP workers in Raiganj, West Bengal

During the Assembly by-polls, a fight broke out between TMC workers and BJP candidate Manas Kumar Ghosh at the Raiganj polling booth. Ranjit Mondal, a BJP voting booth agent, claims that TMC workers broke into his residence on Wednesday morning and fired bullets there. In the by-election, Krishna Kalyani is running as the TMC's candidate from the Raiganj assembly seat.

  • Voter turnout in Vikravandi was around 30% as of 11 a.m.

According to official data, there was active voting on Wednesday in the by-poll for the Vikravandi assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, with 29.97% of voters exercising their right to vote until 11 am.

  • "Situation is normal," an officer said in response to claims of violence in Manglaur, Uttarakhand.

"The situation is normal here," SP Rural Swapan Kishore Singh stated in response to reports of a fight between two groups in Manglaur, Uttarakhand. He also assured that the voting is happening peacefully with enough police force deployed. The discharge of bullets has not yet been verified. The police are attempting to restore normalcy.

  • Clash breaks out in Uttarakhand's Manglaur amid voting

A fight broke out on Wednesday during the by-election in Manglaur, Uttarakhand, between two factions. Manglaur Congress candidate Qazi Nizamuddin, in his statement to PTI, said “Miscreants openly fired. This is an assault on Democracy. There are reports of injuries. There was no ambulance or any arrangements to transport the injured to the hospital.”

  • On Wednesday at seven in the morning, voting for 13 Assembly constituencies in seven states began.

Some crucial assembly seats going for polls:

  • West Bengal (4 seats): Three of the four seats that the BJP had previously won in 2021 are now empty in West Bengal as a result of party members switching to the Trinamool Congress. Former BJP members Mukut Mani Adhikari and Krishna Kalyani will run for the TMC in Raiganj and Ranaghat Dakshin.

  • Himachal Pradesh: Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife, Kamlesh Thakur, was put forward by the Congress party as a candidate for the state's election. On Tuesday, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, stated that the Congress anticipates increasing its number of members in the 68-member House from 38 to 41.
  • Punjab (Jalandhar West): AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat receives active campaign support from Chief Minister Bhagwat Mann.
