Bhajanlal Sharma has been named the new Chief Minister of Rajasthan by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). At the BJP legislature party conference in Jaipur, Sharma—a first-time member of the Jaipur assembly from Sanganer Assembly—was named chief minister. As deputy chief ministers, Vidyadhar Nagar MLA Diya Kumari and Dudu MLA Dr. Prem Chand Bairwa have been named, and the assembly speaker will be Ajmer North MLA Vasudev Devnani. Nine days before the declaration, in the Assembly elections, the BJP had toppled Ashok Gehlot's leadership of the ruling Congress.
Sharma's appointment marks the end of a 25-year-old trend where the state only witnessed Gehlot and senior BJP leader Vasundhara Raje taking turns to rule the state. All of the MLAs voted unanimously to accept Sharma as the BJP legislative party leader. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed confidence in Sharma's leadership and stated that Rajasthan will progress rapidly under his guidance.
Sharma, a MA in politics from Rajasthan University, has served as the BJP's Rajasthan General Secretary four times. He is a Brahmin by caste and has one criminal case registered against him. The BJP has balanced the caste equations by appointing Diya Kumari, a Rajput, and Bairwa, a Dalit, as deputy CMs. Vasudev Devnani, who hails from the Sindhi community, will be the Assembly Speaker.
The BJP had not projected any CM candidate during its Rajasthan campaign, but names like Raje and Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Ashwini Vaishnaw were among the frontrunners for the post. The BJP won 115 seats out of the 199 that went to the polls, with one constituency's polling postponed due to the death of a candidate.
Sharma expressed his gratitude to Rajnath Singh, J. P. Nadda, Amit Shah, the home minister, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech. Under the direction of Prime Minister Modi, he pledged that his team and all MLAs would strive for Rajasthan's overall growth. A new chapter in Rajasthan's history of leadership begins with Sharma's nomination as the state's new chief minister.
