Biden's no plan to meet Chinese Premier Li at G-20 Summit. Why is that?

The upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi will be a colourful affair, with murals, graffiti, and painted walls adorning the venue. The summit, which will be held on September 9-10 at the newly inaugurated Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre at Pragati Maidan, is expected to draw the participation of top leaders from around the world.

The official G20 website states that the theme for the 18th G20 Summit is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," a Sanskrit phrase that means "One Earth, One Family, One Future."

Leaders from around the world have arrived in India to participate in the G20 Summit, which is being held under India's presidency for the first time. Established in 1999, the G20 was created to  maintain global financial stability by incorporating middle-income countries. World leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, will gather in India's national capital for the G20 summit. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be attending the summit, and will instead be represented by Premier Li Qiang.

China's Foreign Ministry announced that Premier Li Qiang will attend the G-20 summit in New Delhi on behalf of President Xi Jinping, who will be skipping the summit for the first time. No reasons have been given for Mr. Xi skipping the summit,  which is a significant yearly diplomatic gathering that China typically prioritizes. The summit is regarded as a crucial opportunity for China to influence the global order and demonstrate its increasing power.

A White House official has said that US President Joe Biden, who is on his way to India to attend the G20 summit, does not plan to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang this weekend.

“We don’t have a plan for the president to engage with the Chinese premier at this time," Sullivan said as quoted by Bloomberg

Biden expressed disappointment following reports that China's Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov, Putin is not planning to travel and will not attend the G20 leaders' summit in India at this time because he is focused on the "special military operation" in Ukraine.
