Assam Chief Minister with central government planning to withdraw AFSPA from Assam

AFSPA to be removed completely from the state of Assam by November 2023, announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He attended the first ever meeting of commandants at Dergaon on Monday, where he made this statement. Last year, it was removed from 8 districts of Assam and later from one district in October.

AFSPA was imposed in various states of North East India. In Assam, it was imposed in the year 1960 which gave special power to the armed forces to carry out investigations without warrant, to arrest anyone who is a suspect and to shoot people on the spot in case there is a need for it. These army officers have the protection of the government and they are free from any kind of prosecution. In these 'disturbed' areas, people can not exercise their basic human rights. These areas are controlled by the armed forces.

To make everything normal and to remove AFSPA, special training will be given to Assam Police Batallions. Ex-military officers will be in charge of this, to make the Assam Police capable of handling situations like the armed forces.

This decision was taken on the advice of the central government looking at the improved situation of law and order in Assam.
