AAP Minister Atishi Hospitalized as health deteriorates during Hunger Strike

New Delhi: Delhi Minister, Atishi, was hospitalized after her health declined while she was on an indefinite hunger strike against the Haryana government as they failed to provide 100 million gallons of water per day (MGD), resulting in a water crisis in the nation's capital. Early on Tuesday morning, Atishi was admitted to Delhi's Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital.

Tuesday marked the start of the fifth day of Atishi's extended hunger strike. According to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the water minister's blood sugar level dropped to 43 units (mg/dL) at midnight and was sent to the hospital when her blood sugar fell to 36 units at around 3 a.m. Doctors have described the rate of Atishi's blood pressure and blood sugar decline as extremely concerning according to the AAP.

"Atishi is now admitted to the ICU and tests are being conducted, so the indefinite hunger strike has been stopped," - AAP MP Sanjay Singh

Why the Hunger Strike?

Since Friday, Atishi has been on an ongoing hunger strike, demanding that the government of Haryana release water from the Hathinikund barrage so that Delhi can fulfil its water supply demands. According to its water sharing agreements, the Delhi administration claims that Haryana should provide 613 MGD of raw water to the national capital, but only 513 MGD of raw water is being given to Delhi.
