Voting for the by-elections in seven Assembly seats across six states has begun, with tight security measures in place. By-elections are being held at Dhupguri in West Bengal, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Puthupally in Kerala, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Dhanpur and Boxanagar in Tripura, and Dumri in Jharkhand.
Voting commenced at 7 a.m. Vote tallying will begin on September 8.
The by-elections are significant since they mark the first contest since the opposition coalition INDIA was formed.
- Kerala: A large turnout was seen in Kerala's Puthuppally assembly seat during the by-election of 2023. 90,572 voters -- 45,639 males, 44,931 women, and two transgenders, -- had cast ballots at 2 p.m., representing a 51.34 per cent voter turnout, according to the district administration. The seat has more than 1.76 lakh registered voters.
- Uttar Pradesh: Up to 1 p.m., Ghosi saw over 33% of the vote.
- Tripura: At Boxanagar, 61.61% of voters cast ballots, and at Dhanpur, 59.62%, as of 1:00 p.m.
- Uttarakhand: In Bageshwar, 38% of voters have cast ballots as of 1 p.m.
- Jharkhand: In the by-election for the Dumri assembly seat, more than 27% of the 2, 98 lakh eligible voters cast votes as of Tuesday morning, according to an official.
- West Bengal: Up until 11 a.m., more than 34% of voters had cast their votes in the by-election for the Dhupguri assembly seat in Jalpaiguri district, an official said. At 7 a.m., 260 polling places in the constituency opened for voting under heavy security, he added.
