Several organizations have called for a Bengaluru bandh today to protest the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The call for today's Bengaluru bandh came from the Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti, an umbrella group of farmers' associations and other organisations led by farmer leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar. The BJP and AAP, two opposition parties, have backed the bandh today. In order to prevent any untoward incidents, the Bengaluru police are on high alert and implementing all necessary security measures.
Section 144 is imposed in the city. The Karnataka High Court or Supreme Court orders, according to the Bengaluru police, no bandhs, protests, and processions. Today in Bengaluru, all schools and colleges will be closed.
A new bandh on September 29 was announced on Monday under the leadership of Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj and the banner of Kannada Okkuta.
According to Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka released water without seeking the opinion of any party. There was no multiparty consultation on it. Additionally, he said that under pressure from the DMK, they released water without even consulting the farmers. He said while speaking to ANI, “As you know, Congress cannot survive without the DMK in Tamil Nadu, and Congress has succumbed to the pressures of the DMK and the INDI-UPA Coalition. The BJP in Karnataka has made it very clear that we will stand firm on the rights of our farmers, the rights of our citizens of Karnataka, and we will not allow any coalition politics or any politics to come in the way of the interest of the people of Karnataka".
