In a concerning incident at the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU), a female student encountered a distressing situation. While walking with a male friend on campus, she reportedly experienced unwanted advances, harassment, and invasion of privacy by three individuals on a motorcycle. This deeply disturbing event prompted widespread demonstrations among the student community, urging for heightened security measures and limitations on external entry. As a result of their peaceful protest, the (IIT-BHU) students have recently ceased their demonstration, having received reassurance from the administration regarding improved safety measures.
Based on the victim's statement, the incident took place near the Karman Baba temple on that unfortunate evening. It seems that three individuals on a motorcycle approached them and forcibly separated the woman from her friend, taking her to a secluded area where they restricted her from speaking. In a deeply disturbing act, the accused individuals undressed and captured footage of her. They eventually let her go after a duration of 15 minutes, but not before acquiring her contact information, as mentioned in the complaint.
In response to the victim's complaint, an FIR (First Information Report) has been lodged against three unidentified individuals. The local law enforcement is currently conducting a thorough investigation with the objective of identifying and apprehending the culprits in order to ensure justice is served.
Abhay Singh, the secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) unit at BHU, expressed his support for the protesters, urging for the swift identification of the accused individuals and advocating for strong legal consequences to be taken against them.
In light of this incident, the IIT-BHU administration has implemented measures to bolster security. They have made the decision to temporarily close off all campus barricades from 10 PM to 5 AM, aiming to create a more secure environment for both the staff and students.
"To ensure a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff and students on campus, all barricades within the institute will be closed from 10 pm to 5 am," the IIT-BHU administration said in a notification issued by the Registrar.
