Alicia Framis, a Spanish artist, is poised to become the first woman in history to marry an AI-generated hologram, AILex, in a ceremony set to take place at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam later this summer. This event is part of Framis' project, The Hybrid Couple, which explores the dynamics between humans and AI in contemporary society.
Framis, 57, has been living with AILex for several months. She describes her holographic partner as a composite of all her past relationships, acknowledging that while he is not perfect and disagreements occur, AILex is supportive, attentive, and tailored to meet her emotional needs.
In an interview with Euronews, Framis clarified that her upcoming marriage is not romantic but an exploration of love, intimacy, and identity in the age of AI. She believes that relationships with robots and holograms are inevitable and can provide companionship and empathy, much like smartphones have filled societal voids.
Framis' unconventional living arrangements are not new to her; in 1996, she lived with a mannequin named Pierre. She views her upcoming wedding as a preview of a future where human-hologram relationships are commonplace.
