Comedy wildlife photography awards is an open photography competition that celebrates the funny pictures of the natural world, especially wild animals captured by professional photographers, or amateurs.
About 40 pictures made it to the final rounds, and a hilarious picture of a clumsy cub falling off a tree has been named the winner this year. The picture was captioned ‘Not so cat-like reflexes.’
The photograph was captured in Serengeti, Tanzania by Jennifer Hadley, and it managed to put behind more than 5000 pictures to win the title. She will now win a chance to go on a one-week safari in Kenya, where she plans to capture the great migration. Additionally, she also received a handmade trophy from the wonder workshop in Tanzania and two photography bags. Last year Ken Jensen captured a picture of a monkey caught in a painful situation in a wire which won first place.
After winning, Jennifer said the cub caught her attention when he tried to fall off a tree like a cat.
Although she thought he was hurt, it turns out he landed down and ran away with his siblings. She said although such shots are highly unpredictable, photographers are always ready to capture anything.
Jennifer, who quit her job in 2021 to become a wildlife photographer, said it was 'a leap of faith'. She said she was initially nervous. After all, she quit her high-paying job to follow her passion, and she wasn't a professional. But now she says that was the best decision of her life. Jennifer also won the people's choice award for her picture which featured a penguin snubbing his mate and was titled 'talk to the fin.' Jennifer said she loved the competition because it shows the real personalities of wild animals.
A picture of two triggerfish smiling for a picture won the underwater category. A picture where Cooper's hawk was playing football with a pine cone won in the category of internet portfolio. A hippo yawning wide with a heron behind it oblivious about anything happening won in the air category. The Junior category award was given to a picture of an owl winking in a pipe.
The organization has a wide range of different categories that includes creatures of the sea, creatures of the air, internet portfolio award, people's choice award, and an award for people under the age of 18. Additionally, 10 other entries will be considered as commended winners.
The contest was started in 2015 by Tom Sullam and Paul Joynson-Hicks who were wildlife photographers. They started it to create a competition that reveals the funnier side of wildlife. One does not have to pay anything to enter the contest. The awards have been created to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. 10% of the revenue made is donated to a charity organization in the UK that supports wildlife conservation. With so much happening in the world, we all deserve to take some time out and get some dose of mirth and laughter.
