Who is Ameya Nelson, the Kenyan Whistelblower who blew open the Adani case?

In a major development, Kenyan authorities have scrapped a controversial airport deal with the Adani Group just hours after US prosecutors indicted Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, on charges of bribery and fraud. The move marks a significant setback for the Indian tycoon, who faced an arrest warrant issued by US authorities.

Kenya Terminates $2 Billion JKIA Deal

Details of the JKIA-Adani Deal

The Adani Group had proposed a comprehensive plan to modernise JKIA by constructing an additional runway and terminal in exchange for a 30-year lease to manage the airport. While the agreement promised infrastructure development, it attracted widespread criticism for its lack of transparency.

Allegations of Irregularities

The deal came under intense scrutiny following allegations by Kenyan whistleblower Nelson Amenya. He claimed the agreement was the result of secret negotiations between the Kenyan government and the Adani Group, bypassing competitive bidding procedures. These revelations led to public outrage, including protests and a workers' strike at JKIA. Critics argued the deal could worsen working conditions and lead to job losses.

Whistleblower Under Threat

Nelson Amenya, a 30-year-old pursuing a Master’s degree at HEC Paris, played a pivotal role in exposing alleged irregularities in the airport deal. Amenya, who also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design and Advertising from Moi University, reported facing threats and intimidation from Kenyan authorities due to his revelations.
