According to a spokesperson for the Gaza health ministry, a Tuesday explosion at a hospital in Gaza City resulted in a significant number of casualties.

The head of Gaza's civil defence first said that 300 people died as a result of the explosion, but officials from the health ministry told Reuters that the number was likely around 500.

Both Israeli and Palestinian authorities tried to impose blame for the incident on the other. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, linked the explosion to Palestinian militants. "The entire world should know: It was barbaric terrorists in Gaza that attacked the hospital in Gaza and not the IDF," he said, referring to the Israel Defense Forces. “Those who brutally murdered our children also murder their own children."

The explosion happened right before US President Joe Biden was scheduled for a visit to Israel.
