At least 50 Palestinians and a Hamas commander were killed when Israeli aircraft struck a large populated refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. Despite this, medical personnel battled to treat the victims, even having to set up operating rooms in hospital hallways.
After weeks of airstrikes in response to an attack by Palestinian Hamas militants on Israeli civilians on October 7 and the subsequent kidnapping of over 200 hostages, Israeli tanks have been in operation within Gaza for a minimum of four days.
Ibrahim Biari was killed in the strike on Jabalia, the largest refugee camp in Gaza, according to a statement from the Israel Defence Forces. It claimed that he was the mastermind behind the October 7 "murderous terror attack."
According to Palestinian health officials, the blast at the refugee camp claimed the lives of at least 50 Palestinians and injured 150 more. The claim was deemed an Israeli pretext for killing civilians by Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem, who disputed the presence of any senior commander there.
Massive craters were formed by the explosion in an area covered in rubble and encircled by concrete building remnants.
Red-stained hands were raised by a group of anti-war demonstrators in Washington to disrupt a congressional hearing on increasing funding to Israel. They shouted things like, "Ceasefire now!" "Protect the children of Gaza!" along with "Stop funding genocide." The Capitol police escorted them out of the chamber.
John Kirby, a spokesman for national security at the White House, declined to comment on the explosion at the refugee camp, claiming he has no information yet. Kirby said the "killing of civilians is not a war aim" of Israel.
