Israel- Gaza War Updates: Hamas halted the evacuation of foreigners to Egypt and more

  • US President Joe Biden assured reporters on Saturday that efforts are being made towards a possible humanitarian pause in the Gaza war, even though Israel is intensifying its air and ground assault against the Palestinian Hamas group, according to Reuters.
  • As reported by AFP, on Saturday, Hamas in Gaza halted the evacuation of foreign passport holders to Egypt. The decision was declared following Israel's refusal to allow the transfer of certain injured Palestinians to Egyptian hospitals. “No foreign passport holder will be able to leave the Gaza Strip until wounded people who need to be evacuated from hospitals in north Gaza are transported through the Rafah crossing to Egypt,” AFP quoted Hamas as saying.
  • Police in Israel restrained protesters who were demonstrating on Saturday in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home. Israel is suffering from public resentment over the supposed shortcomings that led Hamas to launch its October 7 attacks. Over 75% of Israelis think Netanyahu should step down, according to a poll conducted at the same time as the protests.
  • In light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas confrontation, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a warning on Saturday, suggesting that a truce could be ineffective and might encourage further bloodshed by the militant group. Blinken said, “It is our view now that a cease-fire would simply leave Hamas in place, able to regroup and repeat what it did.”
  • On Saturday, pro-Palestinian protestors organised demonstrations in a number of major cities around the world, including Washington, Berlin, London, Istanbul and Ankara. They condemned Israel for stepping up its military operation against Hamas and demanded a cease-fire in Gaza.
