India, EU along 27 nations unite to address AI risks in first international declaration

India, along with 27 other countries and the European Union have signed the world's first agreement on  (AI) artificial intelligence safety at a meeting in the United Kingdom. The agreement commits to work together to assess the risks associated with artificial intelligence.

The participating nations included Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Nigeria, The Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Rwanda, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America, and the European Union.

On Wednesday, the UK government released a statement titled "The Bletchley Declaration," signed by delegates from 28 participating nations, including the EU. The statement highlighted the grave concerns regarding the threats posed by advanced "frontier" artificial intelligence systems.

The declaration was signed on the opening day of the "AI Safety Summit 2023" at the historic Bletchley Park in the UK on November 1. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the Bletchley Declaration as a significant accomplishment that brought together the world's leading AI powers to recognize the urgency of comprehending the risks associated with the technology. Sunak stated that the joint effort was vital to securing the long-term well-being of future generations.

Addressing the gathering at the world's first global summit on AI, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized India's perspective on AI. He stated that  India looks at AI with a prism of openness, safety, trust and accountability.
