In a devastating incident late on Wednesday (US local time), at least 22 individuals lost their lives, and nearly 60 others suffered injuries during a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, according to a report by Fox News.
The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office shared two images of the armed suspect, wielding a rifle in a firing position, on their Facebook page, alerting the public that the assailant remained at large, as Reuter’s news agency reported.
In Lewiston, Maine, video captures residents fleeing the street as a shooter opened fire.
Robert Card, a US Army Reserve firearms instructor who was recently released from a mental health hospital after reporting to have hallucinations, was later identified as the perpetrator in the mass shooting event.
Central Maine Medical Centre in Lewiston said in a statement shortly after the incident that it was "reacting to a mass casualty, mass shooter event" and working with nearby hospitals to transport patients.
Police were called to three different shooting scenes: a restaurant, a bowling alley, and a Walmart distribution centre, according to the Sun Journal.
Following reports of an active shooter threat in several areas, the second-largest city in the state was ordered by the Maine State Police to remain indoors on Wednesday night, according to the Associated Press.
"Please stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals," police said.
