According to the Greek railway company Trainose, at least 26 people were killed and 85 were injured in a train accident on Monday. Around 200 kilometers north of Athens, the passenger train derailed and collided with a stationary freight train in a tunnel near the town of Farsala. Although the accident's cause is still under investigation, reports suggest that heavy rainfall and flooding in the region may have been a factor.
While authorities declared a state of emergency in the area, rescue workers and emergency services rushed to the scene to assist the injured. In addition to offering his condolences to the families of the victims, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis directed an immediate investigation into the incident.
One of Greece's deadliest train accidents in recent memory, the collision has raised questions about the country's railway system's safety. Trainose has said that it will support the victims' families and fully cooperate in the investigation.
The incident resulted in the suspension of train services on the Athens-Thessaloniki route, resulting in significant delays for travelers and commuters. The Greek government has promised to take steps to make the country's rail system safer and prevent accidents like this from happening again.
