Fad of US settlement: 97,000 Indians arrested while illegally crossing US border in past year

There has allegedly been a five-fold rise in the number of Indians arrested for illegally entering the US in the last year. PTI news agency reported quoting US Customs and Border Protection (UCBP) data that approximately 96,917 Indians were apprehended while trying to enter the US illegally between October 2022 and September 2023. The study also mentioned that 19,883 Indians were arrested in 2019–20.

Between October 2022 and September 2023, up to 30,010 were detained at the Canada border and 41,770 at the Mexican border.

Asylum seekers from Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and other countries have been known to enter the US thus far, but there has been a noticeable increase in migrants from other nations, such as India.

In broad terms, there is illegal immigration to the US from all over the world. The research claims that throughout this time, 2 million people were detained from all around the globe for breaking the law by crossing the border.

On Thursday, Senator James Lankford stated on the Senate floor that these individuals travel by plane four times, passing through nations like France, to reach the nearest airport in Mexico. From there, they essentially ride a bus that the cartels have rented all the way to the border, where they are dropped off for their final delivery.

Lankford stated, "So they can say, ‘I have fear in my country." He added by saying, “So far this year we’ve had 45,000 people from India that have crossed our southern border, paid the cartels, crossed into our country, and said they have fear in their country from India."

Lankford underlined his repeatedly stated belief that Mexican criminal cartels are teaching migrants from around the globe how to "game" the asylum system and enter the US while they are awaiting a hearing.
