A man has been detained in Montenegro who is believed to be the wanted South Korean cryptocurrency entrepreneur Do Kwon, is accused of plotting a multi-billion dollar scam that disrupted the world's crypto markets last year.
Two suspects were stopped at the Podgorica airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai, according to a statement from Montenegro's interior ministry. Police discovered fake Costa Rican and Belgian passports with the suspects.
In September, South Korea requested Interpol to issue a "red notice" for the 31-year-old throughout the 195 member countries of the organization.
For fraud and the collapse of Terraform's digital currencies in May 2022, Kwon and five other individuals are wanted.
The interior minister, Filip Adžić, tweeted late on Thursday that, “Montenegrin police have detained a person suspected of being one of the most wanted fugitives, South Korean citizen, co-founder and CEO of Singapore-based Terraform Labs,”
He stated that the suspect had been arrested at the airport in the capital, Podgorica, after being found carrying “falsified documents”. Adžić added by saying, “We are waiting for official confirmation of identity”.
