Christ the Redeemer in Rio turns off its lights to support Vinicius Jr.

In compassion with Brazilian footballer Vinicius Jr., who was the victim of racial abuse during a club match in Spain, the lights on Rio de Janeiro's legendary Christ the Redeemer statue, which has become a symbol for both the city and the entire country of Brazil, were switched off for an hour on Monday night.

The stadium's lights were switched off at 6 o'clock local time to end a day in which the Brazilian government and the football community came together to protest the racist remarks launched at the Real Madrid player on Sunday during a Spanish league game.

"(This action) is a symbol of the collective fight against racism and in solidarity with the player and all those who suffer prejudice around the world," the entities said, according to Brazilian media outlet Globo.
