An elderly couple from Surat, Gujarat, has sought permission from the District Collector for mercy death, saying repeated shop sealing and long-standing financial distress have left them devastated.

The couple, Shyambhai Gehlot (73) and Madhuben (68), also say they lost nine family members in a 2016 road accident.

Despite legal fights in the Gujarat High Court, they claim they continue to face harassment and pressure, deepening their mental and financial struggle.

Their plea has triggered discussion about civic accountability and the vulnerability of elderly people in India.
