What are GI tags that Banarasi Paan has received?

According to reports, the GI Registry in Chennai granted GI certification to 33 products on March 31. Ten of them were from Uttar Pradesh, including two from Varanasi.

The well-known Varanasi langda mango and Banarasi paan have recently been added to the Geographical Indication (GI) list. According to reports, the GI Registry in Chennai granted GI certification to 33 products on March 31. Ten of them were from Uttar Pradesh, including two from Varanasi.

Also, Banarasi paan and langda mango two additional items from the area, Ramnagar Bhanta (brinjal) and Chandausi's adamchini chawal (rice) were given the GI labels.

Aligarh Tala, Bakharia Brassware, Banda Shazar Patthar Craft, Nagina Wood Craft, Pratapgarh Aonla, and Hathras Hing are among the newly added Varanasi items on the GI Registry list.

A sign called a "geographic indication" (GI) tag can be found on locally produced goods that come from a specific region and have characteristics that are characteristic of that region. If a product is a local specialty, it can be given a GI tag.

Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to receive a GI tag when the tags were first introduced in 2003.

The recognition of these crops' GI tags is a significant accomplishment for those involved in their production and trade. A GI specialist, Dr. Rajnikant, told India Today of the GI tags: The four products all have something to do with horticulture and agriculture. The Uttar Pradesh government and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development have been crucial in the process of getting the GI tags.

He went on to say that the trade in the four products employs over 20 lakh people and generates approximately Rs 25,500 crore annually.

The GI Registry had previously given the tag to two varieties of betel leaf. The first is the distinctive Maghai paan from Bihar, which is grown in four districts and is highly prized.

The second is the Mahoba Desawari paan, which is native to Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh and the Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh.

More GI labels

Over the most recent couple of years, the Uttar Pradesh government with its One Area One Item (ODOP) plot is attempting to advance the extraordinary results of the district, like Banarasi sarees and metal specialties, and get GI labels for them.

Banaras Brocade and Banarasi Saree, wooden toys, metal repoussé craft items, soft stone Jali craft, Gulabi Meenakari, hand block print, wood carving, and glass beads are among the 15 handloom and handicraft items that already carry the GI tag. Other items include Gulabi Meenakari, hand block print, wood carving, and hand block print.

Local Varanasi products have been the focus of efforts by PM Narendra Modi, who represents the Varanasi constituency. He presented foreign dignitaries with Banarasi Gulabi Meenakari and wood carving during his trip to the G7 summit.
