West Bengal reimposes mask for Children

Due to a rise in adenovirus cases in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has advised children to wear masks. Many children in the state have been infected by adenovirus and some have died. Banerjee has urged children not to panic, take necessary precautions, and seek medical help immediately if they have cough, cold, or fever.

According to her, out of the 19 children who have passed away due to adenovirus, 13 of them had underlying medical conditions.

Adenoviruses are a type of virus that can cause a range of mild to severe illnesses in the body, particularly in the respiratory system. These viruses can infect children of any age, although they are more commonly seen in newborns and young children. The severe symptoms of adenovirus infection include fever, sore throat, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, pink eye, and acute gastroenteritis. In extreme cases, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia and pharyngeal-conjunctival fever.

In West Bengal, many pediatric critical care units are currently overflowing with children with respiratory illnesses, most of which are caused by adenovirus. In order to deal with adenovirus cases, the health department and chief medical officer in each district have been instructed to remain alert and prepared with the necessary infrastructure and equipment.
