The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast "heavy to very heavy rainfall" for isolated areas of Kerala on Wednesday. This comes just one day after landslides in two villages in the southern state of Kerala caused by the nonstop rains over the previous few days left at least 148 people dead and 128 injured, with hundreds more reported missing.A warning of "heavy to very heavy rainfall" is in effect for August 1 as well. The state is expected to experience "heavy" showers the following day. According to the IMD, "strong surface winds with gusts of up to 50 mph are likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala on July 31."
The Mundakkai and Chooramala areas under the Vellarimala village of the Meppadi Panchayat were washed away on Tuesday by two large landslides. The landslides happened at 4:10 a.m. and 2 a.m.. Due to the calamity, all educational facilities will be closed on Wednesday. In addition, the Kerala government has proclaimed an official state of mourning, and the national flag will fly at half-mast. The government has canceled all of the planned public events and celebrations.
